Man From Plains

Jonathon Demme, director of the fantastic 1989 Academy Award winning The Silence of the Lambs has produced a documentary Man From Plains about former President Jimmy Carter. Demme thinks highly of Carter, but this director has too much cerebral horsepower and cinematic talent to produce another boring film version of a book, in this case Carter's Peace Not Apartheid.

Free of the fears faced by existing politicians and operatives, Carter calls a spade a spade, stating what Bush would never speak: Israel MUST END its occupation of the West Bank for any peace process to work. More in-depth research than the film or even Carter's short book is the more thorough work of established scholar Idith Zertal and journalist Akiva Eldar's Lords of the Land.

Carter goes as far as to use the word "apartheid" and raise images of South Africa, an appalling state where the flies have conquered the flypaper and produced an unstable situation destined for meltdown involving the blood of both peoples.

I don't have the time to read Lords of the Land, but if Demme's film makes it to town, it's a must see. This blog supports Isreal's right to exist. I do question, however, whether the current strategy, which occurs as a win/lose policy, is in fact lose/lose.

Israel is completely surrounded by countries that want them to die. I am so sick of this pacifist bullshit about how they should just surrender to the Palestinian terrorists.

The Palestinians are a pathetic people who have never been able to get their act together let alone become a country. Jordon just kicked them out because they were worthless.

IF anything, I think Israel has shown incredible restraint and willingness to work with these jerks, but no, even concession after concessions yields no solution.

If palestinians got what they deserved, there wouldn't be any of them!

Can you blame them for wanting Israel to die? Israel continues to force more and more Palestinians off their land, wage war against them, and capture territory by force. For every deranged suicide bomber that kills a couple Israelis, they bomb and kill dozens of uninvolved Palestinian civilians.

It's human nature that whenever there is extreme prosperity in close proximity to extreme poverty, there will be violence and tension. If Israel wants to stop the violence, it has to share fairly in its prosperity with the Palestinians and eliminate the haves/have-nots division between Israelis and Palestinians.

I wonder if these right wing "anonymous" people are one person or many. Anyhow, anonymous, there are a lot of people who agree with you that genocide is the correct "final solution" for the Palestinians. One day, hopefully, you will all be burning in hell. In fact, I do not really believe in hell, but people like you make me hope I'm wrong.

it's so much easier to just call someone a terrorist, and that they should all die. It really removes the human face from the situation.

You know what? $%^& it, your right dude, we should kill everyone who hates us and so should isreal, hell, there were even efficient means of carrying that out, pioneered by the best genocidal maniacs ever! I bet we could have cyanide showers and ovens set up in no time flat, we could even pay halliburton 1,000,000,000,000 to do it.

Sheeit, when can we get this shindig started? We'll clean up the middle-east, yessir! them brown folks are too stupid and crazy to live the only way worth living! Then once we kill all them A-Rabs and other undesireables we can live in the new isreal/american democracy paradise of liberated freedoms, best place evah!!11!!eleven! Once that happens we can all be rich selling oil to the rest of the world, and puppies will rain from the sky!

CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH9/11ISLAMOFACISMMOSTDANGEROUSEXISTENCIALTHREATEVERFACEDINTHEHISTORYOFTHEUNIVERSEARMAGEDDONWORLDWARFOUREXPANDGITMO?

Get real man. Advocating rational solutions to problems is not pacifism, it's pragmatism. Clearly military means are not fixing the problem, so maybe it's time to try something else no?

I am so effing sick of these one dimensional thinkers.

What an anti-Semitic blog. I did not say they should be exterminated. I said their espoused hatred of violence while committing terrorist acts and calling for the destruction of Israel is not the way.

Are you suggesting Israel just expose its throat to these animals? Israel cannot sit passively while they plot their next aggression. For Israel, survival comes from the best defense being an aggressive offense that does not give the enemies the ability to gain strength.

You know what they struck in Syria.

Bush is wrong that Iran getting nukes is WWIII. Iran getting nukes is the end of Iran. We should let Iran get them, and then they will hit Israel, once. Then Iran gets to glow in the dark.

Just like Hiroshima, getting this over with will save lives in the end, especially American lives, and lots of money. Let Iran and Pakistan launch nuclear bombs. Then we can really clean house and end the madness.

You do not seem to know much of anything about Israel or the Mideast, anonymous, including the definition of "anti-Semitic." What you are full of is right wing propaganda that has been customized for the trailer trash crowd and those with limited verbal and comprhension skills. I do not know your favorite sources, but I can imagine.

Anyhow, why don't you return to your sources and stay there? I doubt if there is anyone here who has a lifetime to dedicate to bringing you up to speed, if that's even possible.

Yeah, his retention is so poor he can't even recall what he wrote earlier in the afternoon. That's why he looks to Rush and Fox and Ann for new opinions each day to keep him almost on track.

To shed a little light, every now and then I link to a CNN story at CNN.com. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes CNN creates a link on its story page back here. It can result in 100's of hits.

I recently linked to the Pat Robertson endorsement story, and CNN posted a link there to this blog. The odds are very high that our anon here, perhaps the stupidest person to ever post at this blog, visited the Pat Robertson story and clicked on over.

If the guy is a Pat Robertson supporter, then just about anything is possible. I assume you are familiar with some of the things Pat Robertson has said.

Anon, drop a few stories down and you'll see a piece on a guy that puts "God Hates Fags" on T-shirts and protests the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. Sounds like something up your alley.

I suggest you take Liza's advice and return to your radio or TV show. The people here do things like read books and distinguished journals featuring material by people who actually know what they are talking about.
