Meghan Moving Up

John McCain’s 24 year-old daughter Meghan is generating consternation for the old guard of the Republican machine. Having her own healthy dose of maverick tendencies, she has her own blog at which she posts rather regularly. She twitters to 20,000 and has warned the GOP that it faces a civil war amongst itself if it doesn’t enter the 21st century regarding race, gender, and sexual orientation. She signed a six-figure book deal to write about the future of the Republican party.

Her assertions are entirely consistent with the view that the GOP needs to divorce social conservatism, the factions McCain distinguishes as the "old" part of the party. The tea party crowd, which is about a lot more than taxes, should leave the Republican party and form its own, perhaps the Constitution Party. The CP can break out the Confederate flag and foam at the mouth over Obama’s treating other world leaders with respect, his refusal to advocate torture, and the gay community’s plan to destroy the country, the immigrant community’s plan to destroy the country, the liberal community’s plan to destroy the country, and the leftist professor crowd’s plan to destroy the country.

What unifies those in the Constitution Party is rather easy to distinguish. What remains in the GOP after the split will be interesting to see, but if it chooses Meghan McCain to be one of its faces and voices, it could do a lot worse.

The problem, of course, is if there is a split, then neither faction ends up with significant legislative clout for an extended period of time.

What Republicans need, I think, is to go ahead and divorce the social conservatives, and then use that divorce as a basis for bringing back to the fold a large percentage of those who have left the party in recent years because they felt it had shifted too far to the right.

On the down side, though, it leaves that minority who are abandoned to the wilderness to sulk, ponder secession and think about putting all those guns they own to bad use.

Don't you mean "maverick"?! Not "renegade".

It's great to see this young lady stand up to that b*t*h Ann Coulter.

She is much wiser than the many angry old white men who run her party and have been running this country into the ground.

Have you heard Meghan McCain speak? Since her mom is rich as Moses, she is going to be "successful" no matter what she does, but she is not the brightest bulb in terms of real intellect.

Listen to her, and I think you'll see what I mean. I don' read her blog, but I would guess her blog also shows she's not brainy.

I will grant you that she is a step up from Ann Coulter.

I'll bet the image of a babe in a bed with a beer, a Blackberry, and a laptop is right up x4mr's alley.

I honestly think that the social conservatives are blind to what has happened. They are going down. With gay rights, the tipping point has already occurred with public sentiment and the outcome is a done deal with the gears already turning.

The statistics regarding religious views show a similar trend. Numbers are shifting towards the recognition of other religions (or even no religion) as legitimate.

The shift towards green and sustainable cannot be stopped, and the recent economic implosion has cemented skepticism about "free markets."

Obama is concentrated kryptonite when it comes to xenophobia. I have to say I am entertained when the kooks go batshit over images of Obama shaking hands or smiling with "the enemy." What do they think is going to happen? Obama shakes hands with Chavez. Venezuela to occupy Texas!Meghan McCain may not be a genius, but she seems to be doing all right. Her book is a huge opportunity. Smart or not, I think her main point, that the Republicans need to adopt more modern, acceptable positions, is spot on. You don't have to really smart to be correct.

The McCain photo is SO STAGED. On a bed like that all barefoot with the cell phone and the beer and the laptop on her lap. Not to mention that chest. She is totally playing the hot cool modern babe for the Republicans under 50.

At only 24, she knows that the social conservatives will all be dead or in hospice by the time she's 35.

well yeah dude, I seriously doubt that some photographer just happened into her room in time to catch her drinking a beer while updating her blog in bed! Besides, there is no way she drinks bud light on a regular basis. It might occasionally be OK for the cretins (Admittedly of which I am one), but anyone with money would not need to go there.

Doesn't her mom own the brewery? I suspect one would prefer the beer that's free given a choice.

Oh, and I can certainly state that Meghan McCain is most certainly not a future leader of the Republican party. I suspect she will likely follow the Ariana Huffington trajectory. I don't hate her, but she certainly doesn't speak for the future of the party.

You got me. With this information in mind, I would have to agree!

Yes, we all know that the current and future leader of the Republican Party is the obese gasbag and talk show entertainer Rush Limbaugh.

Actually, I think it's great that the GOP doesn't recognize anyone who is young with unconventional ideas, particularly a young woman.

The GOP has branded themselves as The Party of Stupid, for a long, long time.

Drink that tea, mofos.

While the sore loosers are wining from dawn to dusk about Obama shaking hands with Hugo Chavez,(could have been a Trojan Horse shake),I wonder if baby girl knows about the deal that Daddy made with Communist North Vietnam in 1989,when we lifted the Trade Embargo so we could "drill baby drill" in the South China Sea. He did not shake anyones hand. He hugged and kissed them.
