Internally Closeted Senator May Not Resign

Sparing the reader the details, sometimes a homosexual can remain in denial about it his entire life. I know a man in his seventies, severe Catholic and gay as all get out, but he doesn't know it. As far as I know, he has never consummated a same sex encounter.

Well, Senator Larry Craig, R-ID, insists he is not gay, and now they are saying he may not resign. That any member of the GOP, in particular Arlen Specter, is encouraging him to stay in the game just baffles me.

If he stays, legally exonerated or not, he's an idiot. What a mess, and it flies in the face of the GOP spin about "holding their own accountable" while the Democrats don't. The GOP let Senator David Vitter, R-LA, off the hook, and now this?!

GOP leaders have condemned Craig. Senator Mitch McConnell, R-KY, called the situation "unforgivable." Now they're supposed to make up? How does that work?

As posted many times, I consider sexual preference about as determined as hair color, height, gender, and ethnicity. We even have the statistics (4% men, 2% women). Who cares? My hostility towards Craig flows from the fact that he has been a gay basher his entire career. The reader can verify the history.

Very recently I suggested the Democrats fold the cards on this seat. I recant if Craig remains in office. The literature on homosexuality actually has language for realizing one is gay, calling it internally coming out. I posted about Haggard's nonsense claiming he was "not gay anymore."

Well, either Craig is lying or he is still internally in the closet. Stories flutter about in vague but tangible whispers. If he stays in office, the vague becomes clear and the whispers become headlines. One credible liaison steps forward, one bathroom encounter or after lunch rendezvous, and it's over. Just one incident, at any time, and he is a lying hypocrite. The seat turns blue. Fine with me.

UPDATE 9/05 2 p.m.As mentioned in one of the comments, once an idiot, always an idiot. NPR ran the story this morning about Craig's voicemail left on the wrong phone. As Sirocco notes below, if he stays in, the GOP will crucify him in the primary.

I must disagree. Even if he opts to complete his term, that doesn't mean he will run for re-election. If he _does_ run for re-election, you can bet the house he gets crushed in a primary.

If only Boise voters were allowed to vote for the Senate seat, a Dem might have a chance. Since it's state-wide, though, fogeddaboutit.

Early this morning, NPR played a voice mail message that Craig mistakenly left on someone's cell phone about his strategy and messaging. This guy is a nut.

Well, DUH!

The hate mail thing jilted me a little. Of course you are right, Sirocco. I completely forgot we have these things called primaries.

Yes, if he stays he can announce he will not run again. If he runs again, the GOP will assure his demise in the primary.

I am back to blue leaving this one alone.
